Example 1

Satteltester Bild 1 Text

In the accompanying picture we see the pressure distribution of a high-quality dressage-saddle on a warm-blooded horse. The saddle was hand-made and adapted to the horse by a saddler. Clear the pressure zones are to be recognized as red to orange minted zones. The increased pressure load on the right side is clearly visible. Without the associated video picture an interpretation would be possible only relatively inaccurately. Thus we can see however in the small video picture that the horse is in the trot on the right hand and the weight therefore is also correctly inward (thus right). The spinal column is as far as possible pressure-free (white colours mean that no pressure in the place is present). Within the front range we can recognize green ranges on the spinal column, which point on only a small pressure load. This pressure distribution is not yet critically, but should examined further in this area. With the optical examination of the saddle on the horseback no indications for pressure points within this range could be determined. The saddle chamber was far enough and it was possible to look through mounting horsewoman between horsebacks and saddle.

More badly the pressure distribution presented itself after only few rounds in trot (see right). On the video picture it is to be seen clear that it concerns the same horsewoman and the same saddle. Here is also more pressure on the right side, but the pressure centers clearly became larger and to extend itself to over the spinal column of the horse. This picture is not to be agreed upon first with the visual picture of the saddle on the horseback. Only the saddle clothes offer here the solution. In this case the well motivated horsewoman used a blanket cut straight in the back portion. This saddle blanket looks optical very beautifully, was however the root of all evil. By the unfavourable form, which does not adapt to the anatomy of the horseback practically, the blanket was pulled in such a way with each footstep by the weight of the horsewoman and the saddle sheets pulling downward on the horseback that the accompanying pressure load of the back developed. The consequence was regular edemas (water-filled swelling) within the range of the spinal column after riding. The use of a swung anatomically formed saddle blanket, which has air "within the range of the spinal column", brought here easily and inexpensive help.

Example 2

Satteltester Bild 2 Text

We see here the pressure distribution dressage saddle on a warm blood. Here it is to be recognized likewise clearly that the entire spinal column is loaded with not irrelevant forces. If we introduce ourselves, how we feel if we carry a backpack without appropriate pads and our spinal column is relieved, we can feel with this animal. As in the first example a blanket straight cut in the back is used also here as saddle cloth. With the classical saddle another task comes to the saddle cloth than with the western-saddle. The upholstery is on the lower surface of the saddle and is not replaced by the saddle blanket / pad. This serves only to the avoidance of abraded positions and mainly as the admission of the sweat. The blanket or saddle cover should be swung in the range of the spinal column and adapt thus the anatomy of the horse in the best possible way. The sheet is pulled by the leg of the rider and also by the stirrups and pulls likewise downward the blanket by the friction between leathers and material of the blanket. This takes place equally on both sides of the horse and practices thereby in the upper range a traction power on the spinal column from which the picture of pressure distribution can become strongly negatively.

Satteltester Bild 1 Text

After we removed the blanket under the saddle, the picture shows as right to be seen. We recognize two long drawn pressure zones on the left and on the right side of the spinal column. These are pronounced symmetrically and are clearly divided by the yellow bar in the center. During another colour representation the range of the spinal column would be only light green coloured. The ideal fit of a saddle; as wide as possible distributed forces symmetrically to the spinal column, no pronounced pressure zones and a free spinal column.

Example 3

Satteltester Bild 2 Text

Here we see the pressure distribution of a western saddle on a small Arab. Remarkably and easily as problem zone to identify is the green bar in the front range of the saddle. When regarding the video picture is to be recognized, that the horse is going forward with the internal front foot and just in the moment lands with that hoof. The green bar meant a pressure relief (greenish colouring), but the red range before it is a bad indication. Here the saddle does not offer enough space within the range of the shoulder. During the forward movement of the shoulder the saddle is raised by the same. Inevitably thereby however the shoulder is loaded too strongly. As the second remarkable point a red range is to be recognized short left beside the spinal column (coordinates for instance with H 5). This is asymmetrically pronounced (i.e. is no similarly minted pressure zone on the other side of the spinal column). Here, after the saddle had been removed, a swelling of the skin (similarly to thicken, hard pimple) could be identified. It is to be seen further that the spinal column loads with less pressure than the ranges on the left and on the right of it. But the pressure load is clearly too large and the nonprinting area much too narrow nevertheless in this critical range. Here nothing is to be made due to the width of the saddle chamber also by an adapted saddle blanket. This saddle does not fit simply.

Example 4

Satteltester Bild 2 Text

Here almost the ideal picture of a suitable saddle:
  1. 1. Clearly the unloaded free spinal column in whiter or only easily greenish colouring.

  2. 2. A very wide homogeny pressure distribution on the entire horseback with easily intensification in the deepest place of the back. An indication that the horsewoman in-sits deeply into the saddle, her backside is on the correct place and that her back is straight.

  3. 3. No local pressure points by incorrect saddle manufacturing or asymmetrical muscle training or skin changes.

Example 5

By partly quite complex and adventurous constructions some rider tries to do to its horse good. Here a Haflinger gelding with a western saddle is to be seen. Over the spinal column was put a Pad with thick cotton wool upholstery within the range of the spinal column under the saddle to protect and absorb. A good intention, - to see clear as in graphics - which in the effect however exactly the opposite caused.

If we take the unsuitable saddle cloth out now, then nearly the ideal is to be seen also here. The spinal column is free and can under the saddle well move. The entire weight of horse and rider distributes itself on a very large surface and exerts thereby locally only little pressure. By the use of a suitable saddle cloth can become unnecessary the purchase new saddle in many cases!!!
